“This is the most basic premise of polyamory: Love is not a limited commodity that you have to compete for. It’s something that human beings have the ability to create from scratch. It can expand to embrace all the people in our lives, and loving more people means we have more love to give.”
Polyamory: A Clinical Toolkit for Therapists (and Their Clients) by Martha Kauppi
The Work
My work integrates a variety of theories and approaches, but is rooted in the use of Internal Family Systems (IFS) theory. IFS is a model of psychotherapy that views the mind as being composed of multiple "parts," much like an internal family. This approach holds true that everyone has a core, undamaged self, which possesses qualities like calm, curiosity, compassion, and clarity. The goal of IFS is to help an individual connect with their Self and, from that place, to understand, accept, and heal their various parts.
In couples therapy, IFS provides a powerful framework for understanding and resolving recurring conflicts. It helps partners recognize that their arguments are often not about the surface-level issue, but rather a clash of each other's protective parts.
My overall approach is one of warmth, curiosity, and validation, no matter what identities my clients hold. By providing a safe and welcoming space, my clients are better able to explore deeper feelings, motives, and core experiences. I am particularly impassioned to help those whose experiences and cultural backgrounds make them especially vulnerable. In collaboration, I can help my clients understand what holds them back from full self-acceptance and high self-worth. I am highly attuned to the power dynamics at play in our society and in my clients’ lives and don’t hesitate to highlight these issues to help offset or dismantle them.
I firmly believe that desire, sexuality, and relational dynamics are at the core of who we are and should be addressed to whatever degree each client is comfortable with. I am comfortable and experienced in supporting the queer, consensually non-monogamous, and kink communities, and am equally comfortable supporting straight and monogamous individuals and couples.
My professional and life experience make me particularly helpful to clients navigating big life changes, facing co-parenting challenges, considering job or career shifts, or changing their intimate relationship structure.
