Law & Ethics of AI in Mental Health Care: Privacy, Security, and Live Practice

"Can I turn AI off and on again?"

In this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe at least three main ways that AI is being applied in mental health therapy.

  • Identify five key principles outlined in the Biden Administration’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights.

  • List two examples of AI-driven therapy matching platforms mentioned in the document.

  • Explain how AI-powered chatbots have evolved from simple rule-based systems to at least three advanced models using NLP.

  • Discuss three challenges that persist when developing and implementing AI solutions for medical documentation.

  • State two examples of information psychologists may disclose without consent in order to protect the patient or public from harm.

  • Distinguish among the three main levels of understanding about AI that counselors should acquire.

  • Identify at least four exceptions to the privacy rule as they relate to mental health information disclosure.

  • Summarize three practical recommendations for practitioners to protect sensitive client data when using AI tools.

In this interactive workshop, we will first review existing research on interracial relationships and discuss the nuances within those relationship dynamics. Participants will then learn effective strategies for gathering information in a culturally conscious, direct, yet empathetic manner, essential for building trust and understanding. Clinical implications and techniques will be provided to equip clinicians with the proper tools to facilitate meaningful and transformative conversations. We will also explore practical approaches for addressing common challenges and biases that may arise in therapeutic settings.

This course is designed to appeal to clinicians at all levels of experience.
